Amazing Things was born in 2018 out of a season when I was on staff with a college ministry, and we were studying the book of Joshua together. We sensed that God was going to do something new and different in our team and ministry soon, and that was true. There were a lot of transitions that year, that has since resulted in some beautiful spiritual fruit among students and across college campuses in Chicagoland.
The song lyrics are almost directly taken from a few verses in Joshua Chapter 3. Joshua is getting ready to lead the Israelites across the river Jordan in a miraculous way- the river will dry up, so they can cross on dry ground. But before all this happens, Joshua's instructions to the Israelites are "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you." (Joshua 3:5). I originally named the song "Consecrate yourselves" because it felt important that that was the first part of Joshua's instructions, essentially saying: get ready, set yourselves apart. But since then, the name "Amazing Things" has stuck because I feel like it captures the essence of the song, and I have personally witnessed God do amazing things in my own life, in the lives of the people around me, and in that college ministry.
I believe the song is a promise as well, that when we are going in a direction we've never been, or doing something we've never done before, that God will be with us in the journey. We don't need to be afraid, because He is with us. That is such a significant and comforting promise. And it is especially poignant for my husband and I right now as we are in a new season of expecting our first child together!
Lastly, when I was deciding which songs to arrange and put on this 2021 song series, I was really excited about this one because I had a vision for an intricate string trio in the middle, climactic part. I am so happy with how it turned out, and it's one of my favorite moments in all the songs I recorded this year.
